    ESTIMATED COST TO VOLUNTEER

$0 - Yes, Volunteering for this local project is free!  Each volunteer has the option to purchase the asparagus they pick, or dedicate their pickings to "go to market" - where the produce will be sold and the proceeds will go to an HHI food and/or water relief project!

    OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES

We will be coming alongside the Steigleder Family to harvest 52 rows of asparagus each Saturday, starting 04/29/2023, for five weeks!  We will begin picking at 9 a.m. and expect to finished before noon each day.  You are welcome to come to one, or all five days, of this Volunteer project.  No experience is needed but you do need the physical ability to walk on uneven paths, lean over and snap asparagus.

    IMPACT

Volunteers will have the option to either purchase their picked asparagus or simply dedicate the picked produce to the Steigleder Family farm, who will then process, package and sell the produce at local farmers markets and ultimately donate the proceeds to HHI food and clean water relief projects!

    TYPICAL SCHEDULE

Below is a basic schedule for each volunteer day.

    •    9 A.M.  –   Meet at Project Site (1156 Burbridge Dr, Rogue River, OR 97537-4522), check-in to register, and start picking!
    •   11:30 A.M. –   Stop

You can register for one or all 5 days of this project by filling out the "Register Now" button on the right side of your screen.

    LODGING & FOOD

This project will NOT involve any overnight accommodations or meals.  We expect to finish before noon but feel free to bring any light snacks and plenty of water!

    SUPPLY LIST

    • Shoes: tennis shoes are ok (e.g. no bare feet at any time)

    HEALTH & SAFETY

Please click here for vaccination requirements and/or recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  We also suggest you check with your personal health clinic or physician regarding what vaccines or medicines you may require while participating on this service project.  Please note, if you do take prescription medicines, please check with your local pharmacist to ensure the medicines are not considered a controlled substance in the location you are traveling.

    THE STORY BEHIND THE PROJECT

“Phil & Terrie Steigleder are two long time Helping Hands International (HHI) Volunteers who are famous for saying, "If you don't want your life to change, don't go on a mission trip with HHI!" because that's exactly what happened to them.

They went on a mission trip with us to the Dominican Republic where they witnessed how food shortages primarily impacted vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.  They were so moved that when they came home they decided to plant approximately one acre of asparagus and donate the annual proceeds to food and/or water relief projects run by HHI!

'God put this work on our heart!  And, He enabled us to do this; we know it is so much more than about planting and picking asparagus!' shared Terrie despite multiple battles she and her husband have faced with cancer (e.g. Terrie's brain tumor and Phil's back surgery and tumor that should have left him unable to walk).

Will you consider coming alongside these faith-filled HHI Volunteers this Spring to continue harvesting the asparagus field and to support food and water relief projects?

We would love for you to join us!"

    Week 1 of 5

We had a great first week for this project and were able to pick 52 rows within less than two hours thanks to our hard working Volunteers!  "I can't express how grateful we both are to everyone who showed up to help us."   - Terrie

    Week 3 of 5

While the second week of this project was cancelled due to rain, the third week was bountiful - with both asparagus and volunteers!  We picked approximately 65 pounds in 2 hours, cut and bundled the vegetables, and enjoyed fellowshipping with one another regarding God's faithfulness!
